Writing Takes Practice

Writing is a skill that is closely related to the kind of person that you are. Your personality can greatly influence the way you work. A lot of well-known writers are popular not only because they can write well, but primarily because they have established their own writing style in their essays.

You need to find out what way of writing works best for you. Essay writing is a personal activity, rather than just academic. When you write you have to own the article, know every detail of it and understand each word that you say.  It is okay if you don’t have your own comfortable way yet. Writing style comes with practice. It will take you more than a couple of essays to become comfortable, so be patient. You do not necessarily have to develop speed or have a wide vocabulary to make good essays. Although they might come in helpful in the future, what you have to learn first is a style of writing and an approach to writing that lets you succeed within the limits of the particular course that you are studying.

You can start by tackling whatever essay writing assignment you have using a step by step plan:

  1. Decide on a topic.
  2. Diagram your ideas
  3. Come up with a central or main idea for your essay
  4. Write the body of the essay
  5. Create the introduction
  6. Create the conclusion

Following these few simple steps can make essay writing an easier task. This plan allows you to approach your writing task methodically.

Remember, writing takes practice. Take every writing assignment as a chance to hone your skills. If you take every task seriously and put enough effort into it, chances are, you will soon find yourself breezing through your essay writing assignments. You can establish a rhythm to your prose and a writing style for yourself. You may also find yourself enjoying writing as well.

Eventually, this kind of writing will become natural to you in time. Do not rush. You can always improve your essays and your way of writing once you get used to doing it.

The Importance of Taking Breaks when Writing

There is no need to work insistently until you have squeezed every single idea that you have out of your head. Tiring yourself out to the last drop will not make you productive. When writing an essay, staying up for several straight hours is not advisable. People are mostly functional when they are in a restful state. Taking short breaks are important. It is healthy to stand up and stretch from time to time; otherwise you risk having tension in your muscles without knowing it.

Writing your essays with short breaks in between does not only help you relax and stretch but it can also stimulate new ideas. Taking a walk to the kitchen or making yourself a cup of coffee can introduce a thought or bring back a forgotten concept. Quick trips during a writing session after every 40 minutes or so will be far more practical than pounding on for several hours without any breaks at all. You have to remember that your essay will not be judged according to the number of hours that you spent for it, but for the content that you have produced.

You can spend five hours or five minutes writing a single paragraph, but what is important is the sense that you put in it. The quality of your work – the strength of your arguments and the sharpness of your points – are the things that you should consider above everything else. But when you do take a break, make sure that you come back to work. Be careful for distractions because they will always be around, especially if you already feel worn out. Be conscious of the time. Discipline yourself. Take a break but do not wander off.

The Essential Elements of an Essay

When we are assigned to make essays as a part of our coursework requirement, we have to remember that it has essential elements we must apply into our writing. What we must also remember is that in essay writing, we are taking the role of writers, and as writers, we have to properly convey our messages to our readers.

The first thing we must take into consideration in essay writing is to identify the aspects and features that make an essay different from any form of writing. The essay takes on our ideas as the writer in the third person point of view.  An essay is not complete without our opinion, interpretation or analysis regarding the topic or issue to be discussed. It can be informative, persuasive or argumentative, depending on what the professors require and what we, writers, wish to accomplish in our writing. Since the essay must be coherent to our readers, grammar and spelling errors must be avoided.

Compared to short literary pieces, the essay keeps a formal tone and follows a structure provided by the professor. The essay must contain an introduction, a body and a conclusion. The introduction must provide the general premise of the essay. It tells the readers the purpose of writing, the scope and our position regarding the topic or issue presented.  The body of the essay contains all the research data we have selected for our supporting points. It consists of paragraphs that further support our argument or position. The body must also contain paragraphs that only have one thought and supported with the other sentences. The paragraphs must be cohesive with smooth transitions for the readers to easily grasp the gist of the essay. The conclusion formulates the synthesis of the whole essay. It helps our reader understand what course of action they have to carry out or what stand they have to take after we have presented our case. We can also mention what further issues can be written for an essay or what other aspects need deeper analysis in case the reader wants to continue with what we have started.

An essay is also not complete without the facts and evidence that support our stand. You must comply with the proper referencing and citations. The referencing format we can use will depend on what our professor requires. Most universities require the Harvard or Oxford referencing format.

An  essay has been successfully written if it has successfully conveyed its message to our readers. It must also be able to capture the attention of our readers. Their interest must be kept as they go through our essay. Our essay must also be able to evoke a compelling impact to anyone who reads it.
